Saturday August 31, 2018Last day of summer before school begins. My final semester before retiring. A definite chill in the air - feels like fall, but everything is still green and quite lush for this time of year. We are definitely North. Awoke early. Jim has been travelling, so I am here on my own. Set myself up in the red chair for fox watch, but no sightings today. Reading Ruth Reichles "My year in the kitchen" inspiring. Time to get moving. The crows are waking the neighbourhood with their loud brash din. One cannot help wonder what its all about.
Preparing for a fishing day with Chelsea, Corey and their friends on Kashi Lake tomorrow - then back here for food and fire. Corey gave me a small ham from the red pig. I have brined it for a couple of days, along with a couple of chunks of Pork Belly. Plan to smoke the ham (cold - then hot smoke) and braise the belly. If we catch fish (Corey smiles indulgently at the "if") we will fry them outside in the big camping fryer. Need to make tartar sauce and a batter. A crumble of some sort for dessert. I'll see what is at the farmers market. Hopefully peaches are still about. Cant forget about the giant cabbage sitting on my table. Need to get the sauerkraut on the go.
