On Saturday morning I decided to crack it open and give it a try.
The skin, or shell was shiny and hard. A bit brittle, almost like plastic. I cut it open cross ways to reveal a centre of jelly like substance containing hard black seeds. I proceeded to open it up with the knife and scoop out the innards. The jelly and seeds came out easily and clean, as I scooped them into a bowl.
The insides reminded me a little of Passion fruit, but the colour was greyish and not as vibrant as the yellowy green of passion fruit.
Now for the Taste Test

Now for the Taste Test
I decided to add it to my morning yogurt. I like plain greek style 2%, that I usually sweeten with a bit of honey or maple syrup, depending on what fruit I add. In this case, definitely honey.
Then i added some blackberries.
This fruit paired very well with the blackberries, and added a nice crunch to the whole deal. All in all, pretty yummy.
Now the research.
The sticker on the fruit, had a website: [email protected].
A quick search helped me find that the fruit is called a Grenadilla.
This one was grown in Columbia.
Grenadilla contains Vitamins A, K & C, phosphorous, iron and calcium.
I felt pretty good about my healthy delicious breakfast, and headed off to the gym. Great start to a great long weekend.
What Would I do with it:
I think I would use it as you would Passion Fruit: Maybe make it into a sorbet. The seeds would give it a really cool textural interest.
Cooking it with a wine syrup and a bit of cornstarch would make it into a wonderful topping for cheese cake, or a filling for a fruit tart. I think it would pair well with citrus fruits. Imagine a lemon - grenadilla fruit tart.
Pairing it with my morning yogurt was easy and delicious.
